Operation explained in a comprehensible way

The new refrigerator, the new iron, the new television: modern appliances have more and more functions. But this often makes them more difficult to operate. All the more annoying when the instructions are still unclear. Tapeworm sentences and technical language often confuse more than help.

How do you explain operation in an understandable way?

This question is explored in a teaching project. In short investigations with adults of different ages, the students try to work out how an instruction manual can be formulated so comprehensibly that not only 18-year-old technology enthusiasts understand what is meant.
